Two years ago, an extreme, politically motivated Supreme Court denied every American a constitutional right to reproductive freedom, saying it should be left up to the states.

Yet, when given the opportunity to allow Mainers to decide on the issue once and for all, Maine Republicans said "no."

It continues to boggle my mind why politicians and judges think they know better than individual Americans and their doctors.

Juneteenth is a joyous celebration of freedom and fortitude for Black Americans, and a reminder that the road to justice is a long and difficult one.

It commemorates the day that enslaved Black Texans were finally freed from the horrors of human bondage– two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox.

This history reminds us that wrongs are not righted through the single stroke of a pen, but by each generation picking up the mantle to fight for human dignity and equality under the law. I wish all Mainers celebrating Juneteenth a warm and happy day.

Growing up, I always knew I would follow in my fat

Growing up, I always knew I would follow in my father's footsteps to work in the Maine woods. What I never could have seen coming is that it would lead me to becoming President of the Maine Senate.

But it was my father's dedication to hard work, providing for his family, and standing up when things weren't right that brought me to where I am today. It was watching him protest a massive wage cut for loggers that I started thinking about how things could work better for working people.

For that and more, I will be forever grateful– and I know many Mainers share the same gratitude for their fathers and father figures. Happy Father's Day, Maine.

To look out over the Maine Senate from the rostrum for the past six years has been the most unexpected privilege of my life.

It's no secret that the end of this session was a tough one. My heart will always ache for the people I feel were left behind and the good bills that didn't get passed. But I'm proud to stand side by side with my colleagues to fight as hard as we can for people who, for a long time, haven't had a voice in government.

I shared some thoughts from the rostrum as we closed out my final session last month.

Today, you'll be selecting party nominees for U.S. Senate, Congress, and the State Legislature, along with any local offices and measures.

Don't forget that we now have a semi-open primary system, so if you're an unenrolled voter, you can pick which party's primary you'd like to participate in.

Pride Month is a cherished time to celebrate hard-won freedoms and commit to equal protection under the law for the LGBTQ+ folks who are our friends, neighbors, colleagues, and fellow citizens.
