Pres. Jackson shares MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA – Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 1. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“Whether it’s keeping our roads and bridges safe for loggers and truckers or ensuring culvert upgrades to protect our drinking water and natural resources, investments in our infrastructure are critically important for Maine’s economy and everyday life,” said Pres. Jackson. “There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t get questions from constituents about projects in northern Maine, and I am glad to see DOT’s work plan over the next three years.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan covers approximately $2.71 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes 2,180 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 100 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 893 miles of pavement preservation; 2,175 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 222 highway safety and spot improvements; and 166 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in Senate District 1 in 2021:

 Aviation/Airport

  • Safety and infrastructure improvements at Northern Aroostook Regional Airport in Frenchville that may include snow removal equipment acquisition

Bridge Rehabilitation

  • Presque Isle Rail Bridge 21.06 over the North Branch Presque Isle Stream in Mapleton, located on the Presque Isle Sub rail line

Bridge and Structural Maintenance

  • Replacing joints on Little Machias Bridge over Little Machias River in Ashland, located 0.14 of a mile south of Wrightville Road
  • Repairing bridge rail and drains on Otter Brook Bridge over Otter Brook in Caribou, located 200 feet west of Powers Road
  • Repairing scour countermeasures and placement of large riprap along wingwalls to prevent scour on the Squa Pan Bridge over Squa Pan Stream in Masardis, located 160 feet south of the Ashland town line
  • Replacing wearing surface of Squa Pan Bridge over Squa Pan Stream in Masardis, located 160 feet south of the Ashland town line

Bridge Replacement

  • Perley Brook Bridge over Perley Brook in Fort Kent, located 0.08 of a mile north of South Perley Brook Road

Communication and Outreach Planning Municipal/Public Outreach

  • Fish Hatchery Bridge over Limestone Stream in Caribou, located 0.06 of a mile south of Route 89

Drainage Maintenance

  • Ditching on Route 161 in Allagash beginning at the intersection of Route 161 and Carney Road and extending east 2.10 miles
  • Repairing culvert on Route 161 in Fort Kent located 1.30 miles north of the Strip Road
  • Ditching and replacing culverts on Route 1 in Frenchville beginning at the intersection of Starbarn Avenue and extending west 0.50 of a mile
  • Replacing culverts beginning at the Madawaska-Frenchville town line on Route 1 and extending west 1.00 mile
  • Slip line culvert  on Route 1A in Hamlin located 0.16 of a mile east of Brown Road
  • Slip lining culvert on Route 1A in Hamlin located 0.11 of a mile west of Soucy Road
  • Ditching and replacing culvert on the Albert Road in Limestone, beginning at Route 89 and extending north 1.56 miles to the Mill Road
  • Slip lining culvert located 1.25 miles north of the T8 R5 WELS-T9 R5 WELS town line in Nashville Plantation
  • Ditching on Route 161 in New Canada beginning at the Fort Kent-New Canada town line and extending south 0.50 of a mile
  • Replacing culvert on Flat Mountain Road located 1.25 miles west from the intersection of Route 162 in St. Agatha
  • Ditching on Route 161 in Saint Francis beginning at the Allagash-Saint Francis town line and extending east 0.23 of a mile
  • Slip lining culvert on Route 164 in Washburn
  • Slip lining culvert on Route 164 in Washburn, located 1.00 mile south of the Castle Hill Road

Highway Paving/Rehabilitation

  • Located 0.03 of a mile south of Buck Road in Caribou and extending north 0.05 of a mile
  • Beginning at Sunnyfield Drive in Fort Kent and extending east 1.40 miles
  • Beginning 0.28 of a mile north of the New Canada town line and extending north 3.81 miles to Fort Kent Mills 
  • Beginning at Route 89 and extending northeast 1.56 miles to Route 1A in Limestone
  • Beginning at Route 163 and extending north 3.48 miles to Route 227 in Mapleton

Large Culvert Replacements/Improvements

  • Cross Culvert located 1.14 miles south of Route 227 in Mapleton

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements

  • Large culvert in Caribou located 1.07 miles north of Route 1
  • B. Morrell Bridge over Little Madawaska River in Caribou, located 1.13 miles west of the Limestone town line
  • New large culvert  located 5.07 miles north of the Strip Road in Eagle Lake
  • New large culvert located 0.11 of a mile south of Makayla Drive in Eagle Lake
  • Located at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 161 in Fort Kent
  • Located at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 11 in Fort Kent
  • Located 2.06 miles north of the Deboullie Mountain Road in Saint Francis and extending north 0.03 of a mile
  • Large culvert located 0.84 of a mile east of Jalbert Road in Saint John Plantation
  • Located 0.57 of a mile east of Mill Road in Saint John Plantation

Highway System Operation

  • Highway bridge painting on Bridge Street Bridge over Limestone Stream in Limestone, located 0.09 of a mile east of Route 1A

Inventory and Performance Measurement/Rail Bridge/Bridge Inspections

  • Various bridges along the Madawaska Branch Rail Line in Madawaska

Rail Improvements

  • Rail capital improvements for Maine Northern Railway Company in Madawaska
  • Railroad Crossing located 0.42 of a mile south of the Ashland town line in Masardis

Surface and Base Maintenance

  • Paving the approach to bridge joints on Little Machias Bridge in Ashland, located 0.14 of a mile south of the Wrightville Road intersection, and Aroostook Bridge  located 327 feet east of the intersection of Garfield Road and Portage Road
  • Installing under drainage in two areas along Route 228 in Perham, located 0.13 of a mile south of High Meadow Road. Continuing at the intersection of Mcintyre Road
