AUGUSTA – On Thursday, Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, released a statement following the announcement that the U.S. plans to relax COVID-19 restrictions and reopen land borders to vaccinated Canadians next month:
“Yesterday’s announcement marks a huge sigh of relief for many families in Aroostook County, who have gone months, if not longer, without seeing their relatives on the other side of the border, and many businesses who rely on both Maine and Canadian customers to keep their doors open. I don’t think people realize just how difficult it has been for those of us living along the border, who enter and exit Quebec or New Brunswick on a regular basis. It has caused both emotional and economic hardship.
“While this announcement was long overdue, I’m grateful that the new rules will take effect in time for the holiday season. It’s good for Aroostook County families, businesses and the region’s economy.”
